1. If you are injured, don't try to move and make your injuries worse, unless you need to get away from a burning vehicle or precariously situated car. Don't allow anyone else to try to move or other than, medical or law enforcement personnel, unless it is a matter of life and death.

2. Call for help and the police immediately. Car accidents usually involve injury and you want to be sure that all persons involved get competent medical assistance. Also, accidents need to be reported to the police for insurance purposes. When filing insurance claims, one of the key pieces of evidence is the police report.

3. Sometimes car accidents are just minor fender benders and if on an interstate, some state laws require you to move your vehicle from blocking the interstate, if possible. In these types of accidents, be sure to take pictures (Always keep a small camera in your glove compartment for such situations) and that can act as visual evidence for any insurance claims that may need to be filed.

4. Be sure to get the other drivers information, including insurance, registration and drivers license. The other driver may leave before the police arrive or any of number circumstances could occur, so in all cases you want to be sure to get this vital bit of information.

5. If you live in a bad weather country, be sure to keep a survival kit in your vehicle, especially during winter. This kit should include:

A. Flash light
B. (2) Heavy duty D cell batteries
C. (Hand warmers that activate when you twist them)
D. Mylar Emergency blanket
E. Metal whistle
F. Waterproof matches
G. Small Shovel
H. Bottled Water
I. Granola like food
J. Jumper Cables

These provisions, could make all the difference in the world and you want to be sure that you are fully prepared.

5. Finally, admit to nothing. When the police question, say as little as possible and let the evidence speak for itself. Do not admit to guilt under any circumstance, in order to safeguard in case you need to hire an attorney to represent you in the future.
