Why People Do Not Go for DIY Recovery Software

By: James Walsh

The long term impact of data loss can be gauged only after taking its importance in due consideration. In several instances the loss of data has led to a downing of shutters in less than six months for numerous companies. Others may survive but their long term smooth functioning may be impacted to a great extent.

Data Storage

In order to help the companies avoid data loss situations that may strangle their operations, several data storage centres have come up. These centres act as back up storages for the important data of their clients. These centres have numerous high security features and take appropriate fire control and temperature maintenance measures.

The larger corporations have their own contingency data recovery plans. They generally have their own data centres and keep these centres up to date with valuable information. Most of such data centres are at a different geographical location from the main or original company locations.

Data Recovery

In the eventuality of a data loss event most companies turn to professional data recovery companies, which have an established track record, for help. These professional companies can help in the recovery of data in most situations. This is specifically true for the eventualities where the data loss is on account of hardware problems with the storage media.

These companies can be very expensive for a small business or an individual. Thus we have a large number of companies that offer a do it yourself software recovery programme. However it is not always feasible or advisable to use the do it yourself software recovery programmes. There are numerous reasons for that.

Disadvantages of DIY Recovery Software

Overwriting of Data: If one uses a do it yourself recovery software to recover the lost data then there is always a possibility that the software may rewrite upon the very data which one wishes to recover. This overwriting of data may even destroy the original and important data permanently. The reason behind this is very simple, if the software has not been written by a professional and is an amateurish attempt then the software may try to install itself on the storage media.

Company Credibility: There is no way to judge whether the product one is purchasing belongs to an established company or a novice or false start up. Thus it may be that after purchasing the software one comes to realise that it is worthless for the purported purpose. This will automatically translate into wastage of the money invested in purchasing the software.

Disabilities: The do it yourself data recovery software are generally standardised versions for common malfunctions of the computer systems. They cannot be prepared to handle a data loss event where some extra creativity is required. This is because these software’s are written around algorithms with certain pre-defined assumptions. Thus one cannot rely upon the do it yourself software recovery programmes for just about any situation that one may come across.

Hard Disk Drive Failures: The do it yourself software recovery programmes can handle the problem only if it belongs to the software or logical parts of the computer system. There is no way in which these software’s can possibly handle a problem arising out of a hard disk drive failure.

Operating System Issues: The do it yourself data recovery software is also not capable of recovering data if it is confronted by a complex operating system issue. As stated beforehand these software’s are written with certain pre-defined assumptions. Therefore anything apart from or more complex than these assumptions cannot be handled by them.

Hardware Errors: There can be a very large number of hardware errors besides the failure of the hard disk drives which can cause a computer system to malfunction. None of these errors can be checked by the do it yourself software recovery programmes.

These are some of the reasons as to why some people do not go in for the DIY programmes for the recovery of their lost data. The DIY programmes are cheap and easily accessible. They can be procured and operated from the comfort of ones own home. They can also be time saving. Nevertheless this software is no panacea for all the ills that may afflict a computer system.
