This is a built in program that you should run on a regular basis in order to make it easier for your hard drive to perform well. It will take the pieces of files that have been broken up and stored in a variety of locations or your hard drive and consolidate them into smaller areas. Because your computer does not have to work as hard to find all of these pieces it bus runs quicker.

Another thing that you can do to speed up your computer is to use any another program or utility that comes with Windows that will repair your disk errors. You simply run the error checking utility which examines your disk drive for bad sectors and attempts to repair them. In addition you will want to go into your control panel and obtain a list of all of the programs that are running on your computer. You will find some programs that the manufacturer installed on your computer that are absolute garbage. Uninstall them. If you also find programs that you have installed but never used any more install them as well.

Another thing that you can do to make a massive difference in the speed of your computer is not free but it is relatively inexpensive. Check the instruction book that came with your computer and see if it is possible to add additional memory to your computer. I'll most all modern computers do have additional capacity. Just do a little homework on the Internet and you will probably be surprised to find out how quick and easy it is for anyone that can use a screwdriver to add their own memory to their computer. Additional memory will probably cost you in the range of $50-$100 but it will make a tremendous speed difference in your computer.

Several of these are routine maintenance of things that you should be going or in a regular basis in order to keep your computer running at its fastest.
