I owned a construction company for 20 years before I started my own online business. For the first five years, I sweated and struggled, and nearly closed my doors. I came very close to failure, until a good friend offered valuable advice. You see, when you start a construction company, the most important thing on your mind is finding work. I started off with small repair jobs that would last about 2-3 days, but stringing enough jobs back-to-back, without any down time, was kind of tough at first. Pretty soon I had all of the small jobs I could handle, but I really wanted the larger jobs that were more profitable and where you could stay in one place longer (it was much more efficient than setting up for a new job every morning). As my business grew, I began to get larger jobs. Between myself and my helper, we were busy. Eventually it dawned on me - I had reached my limit. Physically, my helper and I were doing all that we could. Then, something occurred to me I hadn't just reached my physical limit. My earnings had also reached a plateau. Unless we could produce more, we could not earn more. My frustration mounted. While I enjoyed my home based business, I also knew I could earn more money working for someone else. An opening for a building superintendent in Houston was very tempting - higher wages, reduced hours, medical and dental insurance, even a retirement plan. It was appealing. As a self-employed businessman, I didn't have these benefits. I was working 70 hours a week with no benefits, missing valuable family time. I wanted a change. I heard about some courses for remodeling contractors offered by the Home Builders Association in San Antonio, about 3 hours away from my town. So, I bit the bullet, got a hotel room for 3 nights and drove to San Antonio. Although I learned a ton in the courses, I learned even more during the lunches and dinners with the other people taking the courses. One of the people I met was Don Boozer (yep, that's his real name!). Don told me to put down the hammer, quit doing everything myself and begin general contracting. "But Don," I asked, "if I don't do the work, who will? I'll just be phoning other people to do my work. Nobody's going to pay me to make phone calls." "Ah, but they will pay you. And they'll pay you well," Don insisted. Much to my surprise, he was right. The next year my income doubled (that superintendent job in Houston was no longer very attractive!) and the following year my income doubled again. After that, I never made less than six figures a year. Why do I tell you that story? Because, the only way to increase your income fast is to increase your business awareness fast. And the fastest way to do that is to start an ez web business or attend a conference that is specific to your industry. If you want to make money online, then go to a conference that is SPECIFIC to making money online and there you can map out a business plan for an online business!
