MySpace, the biggest online social network, announced it has begun a political section in preparation for the 2008 presidential campaign. This Myspace creation will be called the Impact Channel. The site, owned by NewsCorpwill drive internet traffic to pages for 10 presidential candidates ; 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats. The Myspace network saw some 60 million United States visitors in the month of December, according to comScore MediaMetrix, and about 90 million globally. Increasingly, presidential candidates have vowed to use internets viral network power to join the resty of the world and reach voters online. Young voters who have built their own internet culture, like MySpace's teens and young adults, have been exceptionally difficult reach using the traditional media of traditional communication. Myspace visitors are tempted with familiar code to repost candidates' political graphics to their own MySpace pages and to become part of online finance and outreach for different presidential campaigns. Even though Myspace's Impact Channel was launching with a look at the U.S. presidential election, it will be expanded to be used globally for elections of all kinds as well as by non-profit organizations. The Impact Channel creates an unparalleled content space to bring politicians and non-profits to Myspace's online users. Modeled after other Myspace channels such as music.myspace and video.myspace, the new channel will enable the community to learn about the politicians, bring a new level of involvement of politics to the internets daily life, and uncover issues and organizations that impacts their life. It already appears that MySpace will play an important role in the 2008 Presidential campaign.
