NAAG focuses on interagency and interstate cooperation to encourage relationships between the Attorneys General's offices and other organizations, such as law enforcement agencies and other legal offices. At the same time, it tries to facilitate relationships between these agencies by crossing state lines to help with cases of all regards and sizes. The National Association of Attorneys General is at present headed by the Indiana Attorneys General, Steve Carter. Its executive committee comprises members from all fifty states including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

In the 43 states the office of the Attorneys General happens to be an elected position. However, for the five states, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands, the Attorney General happens to be a Government appointment. This also proves to be an opportunity for interaction with different people at various positions within the state or territory and even neighboring areas. In order to build up on this activity amongst the Attorneys General, the National Association of Attorneys General supports the interaction of this sort.

The National Association of Attorneys General also encourages its members to continue to pursue educational and training opportunities associated with the position. Furthermore, the NAAG provides educational and training opportunities to staff members and aides. These opportunities range from litigation skills, leadership, and management, among others.

On the other hand, NAAG helps to educate the public about the position of Attorneys General and what role they play because many people are not aware of it. In the states where the Attorneys General are elected, the NAAG tries to promote the importance of this position.
