Moving is right up there with doing your taxes and buying life insurance. Simply put, most people find it to be a miserable experience. Here are some tips to make it less stressful. 1. Packing Glasses – Nothing is more aggravating than moving your drinking glasses. They break with the slightest of nudges. To avoid this, try stuffing them with your socks. Make sure to wash them after you have moved in! 2. Packing Books – Books are wonderful reading, but a nightmare to move. Instead of filling boxes with them, put a couple in the bottom of all your boxes. Then create a base for the other stuff and you avoid incredibly heavy boxes. 3. Driving Moving Trucks – If you rent a truck, remember it is not your car. It is much bigger, slower and definitely not as maneuverable. Drive like a granny, not Jeff Gordon. 4. Moving Distances – The distance you move is irrelevant. The difference between 20 miles and 2 blocks means nothing. Why? You still have to pack everything, pick it up, move it, put it down and unpack it. 5. Dealing with lots of Books – Unless you have a prized collection, moving books is a pain in the butt. One option is to sell them. You can go on Amazon and sell them online with little or no problem. Find the book, click the “sell yours’ button. 6. Banging Doors – If you have large stuff in a room, take off the door before trying to move it. You will avoid damaging the door, crushing your fingers and creating new cusswords! 7. Renovating Your New Place – Making renovations to your new place is much like the chicken and the egg. Should you move in first or last? Definitely do the renovations first if at all possible. 8. Forwarding Mail When You Move – It is easy to pop down to the post office to forward your mail, but be careful. It can add a couple weeks to the process or receiving it. With bills, this can be a nightmare. Contact creditors directly with the new address. 9. Big Furniture Planning – Before you pack up and move something big and heavy, give some thought to your new house. Specifically, where are you going to put it and how are you going to get it in there? 10. Using Back Braces – Back braces may look goofy, but they are a definite must if you are moving yourself. Unless you do sit ups every night [don’t lie], your back will take a beating without some help. As a general rule, time spent moving should be off limits. Spouses and friends should agree that anything nasty said during the move will not be held against anyone! Yep, it is that fun and marriages have practically ended while doing it.
