Making Friends Online

By: Kerri Glenton

Stress and tension define our fast-paced life. Crime is on the increase and delicate emotions of love and friendship have been crushed ruthlessly. What with incidents of road rage, wife beating and other social ills, most people do not dare to go out to befriend strangers, leave alone establish a long lasting relationship.

It is not wrong to say that traditionally social venues like work place, school or church provided a common place for people to meet and know each another in a way that is not possible in a bar or a club. However, the cases of sexual harassment have been on a rise. Thus, work place has ceased to be a viable socializing option.

Thankfully, the school and college still remain the most likely places for two people to become friends or form a relationship. But, one must not forget that students have to work overtime to meet the high demands of coursework and have little time left to cope with the stresses that often go along with a relationship. Moreover, the ambition to make successful careers overshadows the importance of friendship and relationships significantly.

The number of people who regularly attend church is diminishing day by day. It is especially true in case of young adults. Therefore, even the church has ceased to be a good option to meet people, make friends and establish relationships. The number of safe options to make friends or have relationships is reducing.

Although many people attach a certain stigma to meeting other people online, the fact remains that it is one of the best ways to talk with other people like yourself in hopes of making a connection. There are literally millions of people out there using cyberspace in hopes of making a connection.

There are a number of services that allow people to set up a profile and meet other people with similar interests and tastes. For people considering this option, be sure to use a service that has been around for awhile and has a large number of members. Because these sites often charge money for their service, you definitely want to find sites with as many people as possible to increase your odds of making a connection.

Sites like Yahoo offer free service for chatting only. There are always thousands of people chatting on its site throughout the day and night! In addition, Yahoo even offers chatting rooms that cater to individual states and regions. This increases the probability of meeting someone within your area. Of course, you may not be able to make any long lasting connections, but you will certainly have a good time communicating with new people instead of just changing channels on the television.

Meeting people online allows you to get to know the other person in a better way. You can continue to have intimate talks and have some time to know one another better. Doesn't it sound better to hop online than go out on dinner or movie dates? Yes, online dating involves risk of people posing to be what they are actually not, still it is comparatively safer option and an effective way of meeting people, making friends and gradually establishing a relationship.
