Most of us don't really think seriously about our health until we are having problems with it. Only then do we recall that we probably should have exercised more or gone in for a preventative check up. Alas, the same goes with our dental situation. The health of your teeth and gums should be critical to you. If you have ever had a head splitting toothache, you know as much. It can bring the roughest, toughest biker to his knees in tears. To keep this from happening to you, consider the following. Did You Know - Good dental health can reduce you risk of having a premature baby. What Causes Tooth Decay - Tooth decay occurs from frequent exposure to foods containing carbohydrates, starches and sugars such as sodas, candy, ice cream, milk, cakes and even fruits, vegetables and juices. Premolar Teeth - The Premolars are located just behind your Canine teeth. Premolars have a more flat chewing surface because they're meant for crushing food. Braces and Precautions - When you are wearing braces you need to steer clear of sticky, gooey foods as well as hard foods. Why? These foods can pull off or break your braces. What is the best mouthrinse? - Anticavity rinses with fluoride have been clinically proven to fight up to 50% more of the bacteria that cause cavities. Temporary Fillings - Temporary fillings may have a sedative effect on the tooth. The tooth may feel better after a temporary filling is placed. This is because the filling seals the tooth, protecting the pulp from bacteria and reducing sensitivity. Leaking Fillings - A filling is said to be leaking when the side of the filling doesn't fit tightly against the tooth. This can allow debris and saliva to seep down between the filling and the tooth. How Often Should I Rinse - If it's an anticavity rinse, dentists suggest the following steps, practiced after every meal: brush, floss, then rinse. Teeth should be as clean as possible before applying an anticavity rinse to reap the full preventive benefits. Avoid Teeth Stains - If you want to keep your pearly whites glowing, avoid nicotine, soda, tea and coffee, which stain teeth. Toothache Relief Tip - A toothache often does not mean a cavity. Instead, food can be trapped between the teeth. As painful as it may sound, try flossing the affected area. At the end of the day, your teeth are really an indicator of your overall health. A little bit of preventative maintenance can go a very long way, so do it. If you don't, you'll be suffering through aches and pains constantly.
