How to Install a Ceiling Fan

By: Tommy Saze

Ceiling fans have grown in popularity because they can add a touch of sophistication and character to any room. At the same time, a ceiling fan can also save you a lot of extra cash on the monthly electric bills. So if you want to have both a wonderful centerpiece decoration and a way to cut the bills, you should learn how to install a ceiling fan. How should you do it?

Check Your Skills

Before you think of learning how to install a ceiling fan you should first be 100% sure that you have the electrical aptitude for it. Some say that it is a simple do it yourself task but even so, things could go wrong.

You also need to have some idea about the building codes in your specific locality. The building codes will tell you the exact allowable installation requirements and procedures such as fan height. If you are unsure about how to proceed or simply can't understand the product instructions, then you should ask a qualified electrician to install the ceiling fan for you.

Choose the Fan

The next obvious step to learning how to install a ceiling fan is to find a fan you like. There are now many different fans to choose from. You can have plain fans or those with lights. Always remember though that fans with lights might take up a little more from your circuit. Make sure to check for circuit capacity before installing a fan and light. The diameter of the fan in relation to room size matters too.

One good advice about learning how to install a ceiling fan is that you should only attempt to do so if there are already existing available wires on site. In this case, a product may already come with a manual that may help you with the installation.

How to Install

The instructions given below are simplified versions of what can be complicated instructions in some sources. In some cases, you may need to follow more complicated instructions depending on your fan type. The first step is to turn off the circuit and take down the fixture. With the fixture out of the way, check the existing workbox. The workbox should be properly supported and one way of ensuring that is to check if the joists have braces in between.

The next thing that you have to do is to connect the mounting bracket to the workbox. You can make the attachment easier for you to do by using the bracket and hook to hold the pre assembled fan while you attach. Once the bracket is in place, connect like colored wires to each other with wire nuts. After the wiring is done, attach the canopy or cover of your fan.

The last thing you have to do is to install the blades and cover. The product manual may have specific instructions on this. Test the fan by turning on the power. If the fan doesn't function or if it wobbles, you may have to check the parts and connections again.
