To drape or cover a window one can use curtains or blinds. Their utility lies in protecting the house from sunshine and daylight to create a comfortable ambience. Window blinds are very popular for homes and offices to hide the interiors of rooms from the outside. The material and design of window blinds would determine how much of daylight is allowed to penetrate into the room. There are varied styles and types of window blinds, classified into two basic designs - slat blinds and solid window shades. Slat blinds are made up of a set of slats or panels that are linked together. These slats can be rotated on axis to control how much the amount of sunlight coming into a room. A preferred feature for slat window blinds could be that they are positioned such that they let in the maximum sunlight while hiding the interiors of a room from prying eyes. Solid window blinds or shades lack the rotating elements to control the entry of sunlight. Slat blinds are of two varieties they are either horizontal or vertical. Horizontal slat window blinds are suitable for smaller windows and doors and vertical blinds for larger areas, as they have bigger slats and look much better on large size windows. In all interiors heat naturally moves towards cold surfaces, such as glass windows, and escapes to the outside. This increases the insulation cost of the room. Experts calculate that almost 40 percent of all heat inside a home unnecessarily escapes this way. Therefore it is necessary to use appropriate material in the blinds to insulate the room better. One way to improve insulation is by covering windows with highly energy efficient window treatments...another important aspect one needs to consider while choosing window treatments is that of safety. Every year countless number of accidents are reported in homes due children and pets getting strangulated by the window blind cords. The child safety wand is the most common and popular alternative to chains and cords window blinds. The child safety wand is usually made from clear plastic and, unlike many cords and chains, the wand "hides" behind or blends in with the vertical blinds. The wand is essentially a "stick" about 2 feet long that attaches to the top of the vertical blinds and allows the user to pull the vertical blinds close or open. The wand is easy to use since the vertical blinds glide along the track. By rotating the wand, the vanes can be tilted in either direction. There are two popular types of vertical blind mountings. They are the inside mounts and the outside mounts. The inside mount is best suited to visually appealing windows and they offer a more clean and modern look. When the binds are open or closed, all the four edges (top, bottom, right and left) of the window frame will be seen. In the outside mountings the mounting brackets sit above and outside the window frame. This kind of mounting is best used where more visual appeal needs to be added, or if the window frame is unattractive. As the vertical blinds are opened the left or right side of the frame/window will be exposed first then more and more as the blinds are opened. When the binds are fully closed, the four edges (top, bottom, right and left) of the window frame won’t be seen.
