With all modesty, I am a good-looking 40 year-old woman. When I was younger, I was a friendly young gal terribly sentient to the fact that I caused men to turn and watch as I walked. I never had problems with companions. My problem was jealous girlfriends. To date, 20 years later, I still manage to appeal to men's interest. But in this last decade, my life has changed. I have been troubled by a enormous never ending spell of bad breath. This is a problem that has limited me incalculably in everything. Because I was acutely aware of the problem, I felt my self-worth fall downwards. All my life, I have been dedicated to sound oral hygiene, but the bad breath would simply not give me peace. In fact, it seemed to get worse over time. Anxious to cure this setback, I tried everything. Different toothpastes and mouth washes. I changed my toothbrush every month. I could loose my keys and money, but would never leave home without my mini toothbrush and dental floss. I even chewed on parsley each morning for a time because I was told it was an ancient remedy. But no. Nothing helped. Without Medicare or any other health insurance, I was forced to save money. Finally, I counted all my coins to pay a visit to my dentist. Gum disease was detected. In fact, my gums are swollen and bleed over and over again, which has influenced the development of my teeth, which are weak, yellow and some are even unstable. I am clearly heading towards loosing some teeth. There didn't seem to be a reason for this as it was obvious my oral hygiene habits were indeed outstanding. So I was sent for a head scan. My dentist saw there was a fundamental situation there that had to be checked. The scan clarified the illness was much more troubling than just gum disease. It showed an odd lining that reached from my nasal cavity right down to my bronchus. Baffled, my dentist dashed me off for a huge amount of tests. With the results back, I was immediately sent to a specialist. The diagnosis was shocking. The guilty party of my bad breath was nose drops. A full check-up showed that halitosis was the least of my troubles. And it all sunk in for me then. About 10 years ago, I remember being affected by a cold. Nothing special. It was a cold. A simple cold. I took the regular healers from the pharmacy - an aspirin for the headache, drops for the nose, lots of lemon tea and a few steaming baths. But I recall it did take forever to heal. So, I headed for the pharmacy to get anything better, and was recommended to go on with the nose drops to help me breathe better when I slept. I didn't see, at the time, just how long ago that was. All the regular symptoms went away, except the blocked nose. I continued with the nose drops, because I couldn't breathe without their use. That was 10 years ago. For 10 years, I have been hooked on nose drops. I never went for medical aid to heal my addiction because I never saw the use of nose drops as an addiction. Nose drops! Who would have predicted it was so hurtful? All this time, I never envisioned so many problems would come of this. But I now saw the culprit for my heavy head, bags under my eyes and a heavy chest. My throat is commonly filled with mucous, and my lungs can’t seem to take in all the air I need. Even climbing a set of stairs has become a test for me. My cardiovascular system has also been affected. Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, where the heart cannot pump sufficient oxygenated blood for the needs of the body's other organs. A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is equally a potential possibility. So, now I am preparing for surgery. Four surgeries, to be exact. With an approximate time to heal of 6-9 months. It will include a full exercise program of body building, designed to strengthen my damaged muscles and tendons. I am paying a heavy price for my ingenuousness. Had it not been for bad breath, I would be paying much higher. Bad breath may seem a basic problem that haunts you for not brushing your teeth, but it could well be the sneaky sign that something much more dangerous is affecting your life. In conclusion, bad breath saved my life. And to think that all this was brought on by just a bout of influenza that did not heal properly
