Unless you live in an RV, you need furniture for your home. Buying furniture is all about understanding what you are getting into. Here are some tips as well as some advice on caring for it.

1. Dealer Negotiated Furniture Discounts – Dealers mark up their furniture something fierce. If you want to get a better deal, it is not particularly difficult. Just ask them! If that fails, offer to pay in cash and watch their eyes light up.

2. 20 Percent Furniture Discount – When buying furniture, it is important that ask for a discount. A good starting point is to ask for 20 percent off. Dealers will often give it.

3. Hard and Soft Wood – One would think a hardwood is better than a softwood. This is not really the case.

4. Coil Mattress Guidelines – With coil mattresses, the more coils there are, the better. 540 is usually the top count and an excellent mattress.

5. Buying New Furniture Strategy – Much like the chicken and the egg quandary, should you buy all your furniture at once or piece by piece? In general, going slowly is the better choice.

6. Furniture Shipping Fees – Make sure you understand in detail what you are paying for with furniture shipping fees. Does it include delivery into the home and placement in a room? What if the room is upstairs?

7. Stripping Furniture Finish – If you are a do it yourself kind of person, you need to know what you are getting into. Stripping the finish off furniture sometimes does not get rid of the color. Make sure you know before spending the time.

8. Department Store Furniture – Avoid it! It is difficult to get discounts from department stores. Find the furniture you like and then go negotiate a better deal at an independent retailer.

9. Squeaky Wood Beds – If you have a big wood bed and it squeaks, you are being warned the joints may be coming loose. Have it checked out.

10. Antiques vs Reproductions – Antiques are more valuable, but the quality of reproductions has really risen over the year. Buy what you like give your budget.

Buying furniture is one of those areas where you can really get carried away. Pieces are generally not cheap and they can add up quickly. Make sure you have a budget in mind and stick to it.
