Gold's Gym is A Great Facility That Has Superb Equipment Gold's Gym is a great place to get a decent workout. The gym owners are helpful for the most part and the equipment is great as well. What I like about the place is that they have plenty of free weights. What I dislike about the gym is the typical person attracted to this environment is an idiot. The guys that call themselves hardcore lifters. They go out of their way to make the gym an obnoxious place. I'm not sure if they didn't receive enough attention as children, but these people need to be put in their place. The purpose of this article is to call these guys out and let them know how idiotic everyone else thinks they are. 1) Dropping of Dumbbells After A Set is Complete: This is bad for the equipment and is just idiotic. It does nothing to increase muscle mass and if anything could cause them to injure themselves or someone lifting close to them. Their main excuse is that they are lifting heavy weights. Why is it true that I can quietly lift 100 pound dumbbells and one of these retards is making noise with 60 pounders? 2) Grunting and Other Obnoxious Sounds During a Set: I can't stand it when people scream weird stuff during sets. Usually it is because they believe that they are lifting some impressive amount of weight. I put these guys in their place all the time. I will sit next to them, do the exact same exercise but with more weight. I will do it in complete silence. After the set I'll ask them if grunting makes the weight easier to lift. They usually don't enjoy this comment, but someone has to call these guys out! 3) Not Putting Away Their Weights: There is nothing worse than walking into a free weight area with dumbbells all over the ground and half loaded barbells. This is really a selfish behavior, because it shows blatant disrespect for the gym members as well as the employees. This is a really big problem in every gym I have worked out in. It is especially bad in places that are considered hardcore gyms, but certainly isn't isolated to these places. 4) Performing Sets in Front the Dumbbell Racks: This is not thinking of others who share the same gym. The guys that do this are selfish and couldn't care less about your workout. While they are doing this, you can't access the weights they are in front of and you can't put any dumbbells away. I wish more gym employees would take the steps necessary to stop this poor behavior. 5) Using 2+ pieces of Equipment at Once: This isn't a problem if the person doing this allows you to work in. It is a problem if the guy thinks that he can tie up all 2-3 pieces of equipment for 10 minutes. I have hopped on a bench after seeing that nobody has been on it for 5 minutes only to have a guy scream from across the gym "I'm using that!" I typically will call them on it and tell them that I saw that they were doing a different exercise. I always end up working in with these guys, regardless of if they want to or not. I simply won't tolerate this type of behavior. Summary: As I mentioned before, I like Gold's Gym and I've worked out at over a dozen of their facilities. Theses types of gym members are in every gym, but places that are considered more hardcore like Gold's just seem to have a higher concentration of these guys. It is important for me to point out this stuff, so gyms can be friendlier and more productive. My hope is that gym owners will limit this type of behavior in the future.
