A 301 redirect is a line of code that is used to transfer or redirect visitors of an old and established website into a new one that is fresh and unknown. To put it simply, a visitor’s browser is automatically directed to a preset website or URL. Applications of 301 Redirects Why would you need to redirect the visitors from one web page or website to another? Let me count the ways. First of all, 301 redirects are mighty useful if you have to rename, repair, or even replace the whole website. If you need to some maintenance on your website or you wish to change domains, you may need a 301 redirect. In the first scenario, a 301 redirect will divert your visitors to a working, temporary website. This way, your visitors could still access information even if they don’t know your temporary website address. In the second scenario, a 301 redirect can be used to direct traffic from your old domain to your new domain. This would help you retain whatever fame or popularity you have already acquired through your old domain. Secondly, a 301 redirect can be used to redirect traffic from expired domains to your own domain. What you do is buy expired domains, find a server for them, and set up a 301 redirect there so that visitors of the old domain will automatically be diverted to your own website. A 301 redirect is therefore useful for generating targeted traffic to your website. Thirdly, a 301 redirect can be used to ensure that your visitors will not get error pages when they mistype or misspell your web address in the URL bar. For instance, you can register 10 domains that are variations of your own website (one is a dot com, another is a dot net, one is a misspelling, etc.) so that visitors mistyping the information in the address bar can still reach your true website. Finally, 301 redirects can be used to cloak affiliate links. In some cases, visitors don’t like to click on affiliate links. Some even remove the affiliate ID from the address bar before proceeding. This means that some affiliate marketers are suffering a loss of potential commissions. By masking your affiliate link with a redirect 301 code, you may be able to boost your affiliate marketing income. How to Set up 301 Redirects All you need to do is access or create your own .htaccess file in your server. In case there is more than one, use the one in the root directory (where your web pages are). If you’re making your own with a notepad, be sure to upload it afterwards to the root folder. Open your .htaccess file and add one line of redirect 301 code for every redirect desired or required. For instance, if you need to cloak five affiliate links, then you need to add five redirect lines to the .htaccess file. The code is actually very simple. It is: redirect 301 /OldOrBogusURL NewOrDestinationURL Replace “OldOrBogusURL” with the URL of the page under renovation, the old/expired/other domain’s main page or the fictitious webpage (in affiliate links cloaking). Then, replace “NewOrDestinationURL” with your replacement/new URL or your affiliate URL to which you would like your visitors diverted.
